THE theatre arts class at the Vessigny Secondary School that graduated this year displayed their talents by putting on a special production this month.
The play was performed on three occasions at the Vessigny Secondary School auditorium.
Theatre Arts was introduced at the Vessigny Secondary School in September, 2008. In 2010, 19 students opted to do theatre arts for Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) this year. Fourteen out of the 19 students who chose theatre arts as an extra subject, used Tuesday afternoons and their lunchtime to study the subject.
The class decided to perform the play entitled ” The Price of Progress” written by Joshua Logan in 2007 for a play writing course at the University of the West Indies (UWI). In 2009 the play was a finalist in the Folk Theatre Category of the Prime Minister’s Best Village Trophy Competition.
Logan is on the committee of the Iere Theatre Productions Ltd. which was responsible for the drama productions “Temple in the Sea” and the recently successful “Eric the Musical”.
The play centres on protagonist Bird who is an old, alcoholic fisherman, resistant to the industrial development in his area and who refuses to sell his prime beach-side property for the construction of a deep water habour. Fishing has gradually become unprofitable in the village, as the catch has progressively dwindled over the years. However, Bird believes that would change when the “first run” comes. It seems very unlikely that the “first run” would come since it has been many years since the last one came. Muscle, another fisherman and Bird’s friend, is forced to give up fishing, as his girlfriend is pregnant and seek a more profitable occupation with the industries. His love for fishing forces him to secretly continue fishing believing that the “first run” would come and make fishing profitable.
However, Suzan, Muscle’s girlfriend, falls as she is on her way to deliver food for Muscle, who is supposedly training for a new job. His plan is revealed and the fall compromises the health of the baby who is in now in need of an expensive lifesaving surgery which Muscle certainly can’t afford. Bird sells his house to save the baby’s life and drinks himself to death. Muscle finally and permanently gives up fishing and becomes employed with the industry.
