This week, more John Cage, an artist who makes large-scale architectural installation discusses architecture, sound art takes Manhattan by storm, and some art critics have hearts: you’ll find them among Arts and Labor’s panel at Housing Works Thursday evening.
Wednesday, October 24th
Artist Talk: Monika Sosnowska, John Tishman Auditorium at The New School
A boner for readers who respond to the phrase “engaging the built environment”: Monika Sosnowska has been making paradoxical architectural spaces which have become more and more involved over time, from welding Chamberlain-esque fire escapes to log-jammin’ a scale model of a communist housing block into the Polish Pavillion of the 2007 Venice Biennale.
6:30 PM, 66 West 12th Street. Get tickets here.
Thursday, October 25th
Roundtable: Art Writing as Craft, Labor, and Art, Housing Works Bookstore Cafe
Given the fact that you don’t get paid and nobody reads you, why are more and more people trying to become arts writers? For some, it’s passion, and you’re likely to find a lot of it in Arts and Labor’s round table. the Times’s Ken Johnson, The Village Voice’s (and Arts and Labor’s) Martha Schwendener, ARTInfo’s socially-engaged go-to Ben Davis, and AFC’s own beating heart Paddy Johnson are among the list.
7 PM, Housing Works, 126 Crosby Street
Openings: Chelsea
Chelsea openings! Yay, kinda. Highlights include Glenn Ligon’s “Neon” at Luhring Augustine (531 W 24 street), Lin Tianmiao’s embroidered Chinese slang terms for women at Galerie Lelong (528 West 26th Street), and another stripey painting show (Stella, Noland, Louis, Frankenthaler) at Mitchell-Innes & Nash (534 W 26 street). And if you can overlook the casual sexism, the all-male show “Borrowed Time” at Edward Thorp (210 Eleventh Ave at 24th st, 6th floor) sounds exciting: it’ll include Philip Guston, Man Ray, and Marcel Duchamp, and Duane Michals, among others.
Roughly 6 – 8 PM
Artist Talk: Skyler Fein, C24 Gallery
If you’re bored with all the super-safe shows opening in Chelsea, then New Orleans artist Skyler Fein’s free talk at C24 Gallery might be a breath of fresh air. His statement likens the present day U.S. to the Soviet Union circa 1988 on the brink of collapse.
7 PM, 514 W 24 street, rsvp at info@c24gallery.com
Saturday, October 27th
Chelsea Sound: Printed Matter
As Art Fag City’s Corinna Kirsch wrote last week, this Saturday hails the first annual artists’ music festival.
Chelsea Sound is the collaborative product of Printed Matter, Eyebeam, Electronic Arts Intermix, and Family Business, so you know this is gonna be done right. And if the sound of art is something you’re interested in, then do we have an album for you.
2 – 9 PM, 195 10th Avenue

DANCE: Cage on Vinyl on Marley, National Academy Museum
This is a good week for the sound art buffs in the crowd. Another celebration for the Almighty John Cage takes place inside a separate exhibition for John Cage. Boo-yah. As part of its Cage: Transmitted Series, Norte Maar will present a series of dances by “dance luminaries,” who will take turns selecting a Cage record and dancing to it in 15-minute intervals. Unlike the five thousand other John Cage celebrations this year, this one’s different. This is promised to be a Historical Event.
Dancers include Douglas Dunn, Julia K. Gleich/Gleich Dances, Molissa Fenley,Sara Rudner, Take Dance, Gus Solomons Jr., Pat Catterson, Jin Ju Song-Begin, Janet Charleston, Paul Singh, Sally Silvers, Gabriella Hiatt, Julie Fotheringham, Ara Fitzgerald,DELIRIOUS Dances/Edisa Weeks, Liz Santoro, Lynn Parkerson, and others to be announced.
11- 6 PM, 1083 Fifth Avenue (at 89th Street)
Sunday, October 28th
Opening:It’s a bag full of snakes and chocolate, NOVELLA Gallery
I’m a sucker for a good title, but the choice header also bodes well for this show; artist Sarada Rauch translates oral traditions into video and digital prints.
6-8 PM, 164 Orchard Street
